Dental Patients Benefit From Modern Technology

Dr. Nicholas Papapetros has opened the Village Dental Group at 622 Main St. in Shrewsbury.

The dental practice is Invisalign certified which is a modern way to straighten teeth without the more traditional brackets and wires.

The clinic also specializes in treating gum disease, and recently they were approved to use botulinum toxins (commonly known as Botox) to help with various dental issues such as grinding of the teeth and temporomandibular joint disorders (TMJ).

Dr. Papapetros has several items of modern dental equipment in his practice, including the facility to do 3-D panoramic X-rays.

“It’s able to deliver X-rays, using 90 percent less radiation,” said Dr. Papapetros. “And it’s able to give the dentist a 3-D view of the jaw, both the upper part called the maxilla, which doesn’t move, and the lower part called the mandible, which moves when you talk or eat. This equipment can detect the usual dental abnormalities, but also oral cancer which over 40,000 Americans will be diagnosed with each year. Of those newly diagnosed individuals, only slightly more than half will be alive in five years.

Village Dental also uses digital radiographs which the dentist can view and zoom into on a computer screen for far better diagnostic abilities, and the latest ultrasonic scalers for cleanings to shift tartar, plaque and bacteria.
