300 people turned up at the weekend to receive free dental care in San Francisco’s Western Addition where more than 20 dentists, hygienists and dental students were in attendance. The free dental day was organized by the Adventist Medical Evangelism Network.
Many patients had not visited a dentist for some time, and they were grateful to receive the free dental treatments for fillings, root canals, tooth extractions and cleanings.
One patient from San Francisco required teeth cleaning after avoiding regular dental care for two years. “I went to the dentist, where they said I needed deep cleaning, and even with insurance, it was going to be $1,000, so I said, ‘Bye!’ “
The dental event ran from 7:30 a.m. to 5 p.m., but those who turned up after 10.00am had to unfortunately be turned away due to demand.
Dentists got something out of working on desperate patients, too. “If I can put a smile on their face and get them out of pain, that’s wonderful.”
